Act 3 (Waiting for Godot)

It’s the next day, same time and same place. Vladimir stands there alone looking for anyone else to talk to. He walks to one side of the stage. Then walks to the other. He looks around, he sees the stone. He recognizes the place. He starts to remember the wait, Lucky, Pozzo, the tree, the little boy and his friend Estragon. He wonders why he hasn’t seen him yet. He looks at the tree. the tree is different. it has no leaves again. now he is worried about Gogo. he looks here and there for him but he can’t find him. he doesn't know how to fill this empty void. but he thinks that if Godot comes today he will not only save him but also find Gogo. He waits anxiously not knowing how to pass the time. Surely Gogo knew where to meet him. They had been there waiting for Godot before. is it possible that gogo forgot where to meet? Is it possible that he even forgot about him?

Vladimir: What do I do now? Wait? Ah, yes, I am supposed to wait. Wait for Godot.  But I cannot wait alone! Where is Gogo? Am I supposed to wait for him too!?! Maybe I should sing and Gogo will come….

Vladimir starts humming, he forgot the words for his song…. He hummed for a while… No one comes….

Vladimir: Maybe I should just call him? (Vladimir takes a deep breath and loudly says) Gogo! Gooooogoooo, will you come here?

Estragon enters, head bowed, hands behind his back

Vladimir: I have missed you so! I won’t even ask you if they beat you, I know they did. But tell me, are you ready?

Vladimir tries to embrace Estragon.

Estragon: Ready for what?
Vladimir: For waiting of course! Why are you late?
Estragon: I was asleep, but your humming woke me up. I don’t know why you never let me sleep.
Vladimir: I felt very lonely. I thought you had left me forever. And you know I don’t like being alone.
Estragon: One of these days I will part my ways with you
Vladimir: You can not survive one day without me!

Estragon goes to his same spot, he sits. Vladimir is walking back and forth

Estragon: Is he definitely coming today?
Vladimir: The boy said he will come tomorrow
Estragon: Are we in the right place?
Vladimir: Yes, we are

They look at the tree. But the tree is dead

Vladimir: The tree looks different.
Estragon: What do you mean the tree is different?
Vladimir: Look at the leaves, they are gone! It had leaves yesterday! Remember?
Estragon: Was it yesterday?
Vladimir: I think so...
Estragon: How can it die overnight?

Vladimir is thinking but doesn’t know the answer

Vladimir: Are you hungry?
Estragon: I do feel squeamish
Vladimir: I only have a turnip.
Estragon: You know I don’t like turnip!

Vladimir starts looking at the inside pockets of his jacket and after a long time he finds a tiny carrot. He happily hand the carrot to Estragon.

Vladimir: Here you go my dear friend! Make the most of it, that’s the last one
Estragon: You saved me
Vladimir: We should look out for each other, we are friends. Remember?

Estragon eating the carrot and he is thinking…

Estragon: You didn’t answer my question
Vladimir: What question?
Estragon: (he is thinking and eating at the same time)  Wait…. about a …..Oh, yes, the tree…. why is it dead?
Vladimir: I don’t know (he gets annoyed) Why do you always ask me silly questions? Just finish your carrot! You know it’s not polite to talk with your mouth full!

Estragon enjoying his carrot. Vladimir is still walking

Estragon: What should we do to pass the time? (He finished his carrot)
Oh, I know, you should sing Didi!
Come one, Didi, sing a song!

Vladimir is looking at the tree and not listening to Estragon

Estragon: Or maybe we could play….

But again Vladimir doesn’t hear Estragon because he is lost in thoughts

Estragon: Didi!... Didi!!! (saying it loud)
Vladimir: What ? Why are you shouting?
Estragon: You have not been listening to a word I just said!
                I don’t know why we don't’ just part ways….
Vladimir: Because you cannot do anything without me.
Estragon: I asked you if you want to play?
Vladimir: No, let’s not do anything, it’s always safe
Estragon: Are you afraid? Are you worrying that he will not come today?
Vladimir: I want to tell you something…
Estragon: What?
Vladimir: The tree…. it’s like the writing on the wall…
Estragon: The what?….
Vladimir: The writing on the wall. Don’t you remember the story...Oh, come on, don’t you understand?
Estragon: I do not understand what you are on about...I was better off a sleep.
Vladimir: The writing on the wall. It’s from the Bible. You know.
Estragon: I honestly do not know what your are talking about.
Vladimir: The story about the king who saw the handwriting on the wall.
Estragon:  Oh, yes, he got scared…(Estragon looks at the tree) And the tree?
Vladimir: What about the tree?
Estragon: Why is it like the writing on the wall?.

Estragon stands up frightened
Vladimir trying to figure out the question while Estragon finds a comfortable position on his rock.

Estragon: Well?
Vladimir: I am just saying that the leaves are gone from the tree. It had leaves yesterday but not today. what if it were a sign...a sign that something terrible is going happen, that’s why the tree is dead?
Estragon: Terrible..like what?
Vladimir: What if Godot doesn’t come today...what if it means that we cannot be saved?  I can’t bear it. This is terrible!
Estragon: Calm yourself Didi! Calm yourself. You said that he would save us. I am sure that something could be done. The boy said that he would come today, right? Now lets do something to pass the time as we wait.

Estragon is looking at the sky

Estragon: Look, it’s  a charming evening we’re having.
Vladimir: I can’t force myself
Estragon: Can I be of any help?
Vladimir: How?
Estragon: Think of what is worse.
Vladimir: Like what?
Estragon: Your breath stinks of garlic, for instance.
Vladimir: I told you it was for the kidneys, your feet stink too.
Estragon: Okay, then let’s think of what is better.
Vladimir: I have to think about this one.

Vladimir walking back and forth in his thoughts while estragon falls asleep again.

Vladimir: (looks around and sees Gogo asleep) Ah Gogo my dear friend, asleep again. How I wonder what you think of when your asleep. The peace that I see you in when you are asleep makes me wonder, what is that peace of mind that you experience when you no longer see what is happening around you? Is that really peace? Is it wise to pretend and not see what goes on around one self or is it selfish? Is a peace of mind worth being selfish for? Or should one rather be awake and aware of everything that happens around him with no peace of mind full of thoughts... is being aware suppose to give hope of our salvation or is it a mere foolish attempt to comfort ourselves of the deeds we wish we had not done…(looks at the sky..and then goes towards Gogo. Watches him sleep. Then calls out his name) Gogo...Gogo.

Estragon jumps up in a startle.

Estragon: what.. is he here...did I miss him?
Vladimir: It will be night soon. He did not come again.
Estragon: What shall we do? will he come tomorrow..will we come tomorrow...is there nothing to be done? Oh what shall we do, Didi?

Vladimir looks out in the distance.

Vladimir: We can always hang ourselves. (in a hopeless tone)

Estragon excited of the thought.

Estragon: Ah yes, we can hang ourselves...and get an erection just like you said.
Vladimir: Did you remember to bring the rope?

Estragon trying to remember

Estragon: A rope?...did i remember to bring the rope.( puts his hands on his waist) Ah the rope.. I have the rope. (untying the rope for around his waist as if it were a belt) I remembered to bring the rope.
Vladimir: Good. Hand me the rope. (Estragon hands him the rope and they go towards the tree) Now let me put the rope over the branch and then we can hang ourselves together.
Estragon: Yes, lets hang ourselves together.

They put the rope around the branch of the tree. As soon as they pull on the rope the branch breaks and they both fall to the ground.

Estragon: The branch broke. Now what do we do? We can not even hang ourselves. What is to become of us?

Vladimir sits up lost in thoughts not listening to Estragon’s worries.

Vladimir: the branch broke…(whispers to himself) the branch broke...as if we were not meant to be hanged. What if we are not meant to be hanged?  Does that mean that there is hope for us? Hope for our salvation? ...That’s it Gogo.

Estragon: What’s it!?

Vladimir: There is hope! I thought  all hope was lost ,but there is hope!  Don’t you see.?!? The branch broke - meaning that we shouldn’t hang ourselves instead wait for Godot who can definitely save us. ( stands up and walks away from the tree. Estragon follows)
Estragon: So what should we do?
Vladimir: Now i am certain that he will save us...he will save us…Gogo….tomorrow we will wait  for Godot again...because I have regained hope in our redemption. There is new hope with every new day.(night falls). Ah yes, with every darkness comes a new light.
Estragon: So shall we go now, Didi?
Vladimir: (looks at Gogo) yes, Gogo, we shall.
As Vladimir and Estragon look out in the distance and don’t move, the tree behind them once again regains all its leaves and is no longer dead.

one scene from the play

struggle; Isolation; Adulthood; Self-interest; Meaning / knowing; Suffering; Patience; Oppression; Backstabbing; Deceiving; Confusion; Uncertainty; Nature of men; Friendship / companionship; Poverty; Mental hardship; Redemption / salvation

The scene I choose is in the beginning of the second act.
On page 38 through 39.
It's when Vladimir is asking Etragon if someone beats him at night. And E. is thinking that V. seems more happy without him.
1. Why did V. sing? Is that because he was just happy?
2. Why E. is always thinking that V might be better alone, than with E.?
3. How come V missed E but that the same time he was happy?
4. How did E reacted to it?
5. Why V sounded happy when he said "Now? (joyous) There you are again", and his happiness disappear with every word when he continued "there we are again... (gloomy) there I am again."
6. Why V used work "crawling" when he asked "then why do you always come crawling back?", why he didn't used any other words? Did they indeed "crawled"?
7. When V. tried to understand why "they" bit E, he said "I would have stopped you from doing whatever it was you were doing" E said that he didn't do anything. What did he mean by that? Did he  mean that  he didn't do anything BAD? Or he meant that he didn't do anything good, when he could have and that's why he got the biting. ?
8. V and E are talking about been happy. Why V needed to hear from E that he was happy even if it's not true?
9. Why does V say he is happy, how can he proof it?
10. When V said that the things changed? Did they really? How long has passed?
11 Why the tree is never the same form one second to the next? Is it? If only one time they have notice the difference (the leaves)
12. Was it truly yesterday when act one happened? Or more time has passed?
13. How does E forget immediately or never forget? Does he do it on purpose? When he actually remember something from the past...

Questions about godot

1.            What is your character like?  What is he not like?

Vladimir. He has a friend (Estragon = Gogo). Vladimir doesn't want to be alone, he wants company. He is the thinker. He makes the decisions for both of them. He knows that he has a purpose in life, he is waiting for Godot. And he takes that task seriously. He is caring person.
He is not forgetful. Only one time he forgot something (where they were supposed to wait, specific spot). He is not boring for Gogo, he kind of entertain him through the play.

2.            Identify the objects your character interacts with?

There is a carrot, radish, turnips, a hat, a coat

3.            Describe HOW your character interacts with the other characters.  Use specific examples!!!

Vladimir has a soft spot in his heart for Estragon. He embrace him a lot . It seems that V. almost always have answers to Gogo's questions, and his answers are confident.  He is taking care of Gogo like a mother of a child. He is on look out for his friend. When Pozzo came with Lucky, V was telling Gogo to be careful around Lucky, he was protecting his friend. (when L kicked E, V showed compassion toward E)
When V. and E. are talking to Pozzo, V is the one who wants to keep everything in control, he tells E. when to ask Lucky a question. He is the one who sees little details and comment on them, for example how P is treating L.
V wanted L to think above everything else he could do, because he himself was a thinker.
V showed to a boy that he wasn't indifferent to his life by asking him personal questions about his day's routine.

4.            How does your character change?  How does your character behave in act 1?  How does      your character behave in act 2?

I don't think he acts differently in both acts. His personality stays the same.

5.            How does your character make sense of his world?  What does he think?  How does he think

V thinks a lot, he thinks all the time, he thinks for himself and for his friend. Maybe he even thinks that he is like of responsible for his friend and that's why he is always deciding what to do to kill the time. He wants to connect the pass with present . He analyzes. Even though he never saw Godot he figure out quickly that a Pozzo is not Godot, neither Lucky. When he saw a boy, he didn't even let himself to come to the though that it might be a Godot. Somehow he know that he is supposed to be different, and he would recognize him...

 3) How is Didi different than Gogo?
Didi is Vladimir. Gogo is Estragon. Didi is smarter then Gogo, and seems like he is the decisions maker.

TV addiction (my part for our presentation - poster)

What is TV addiction?
   - when you are spending an unusually large amount of time watching it
   -  using it more often than intended
   -  cannot go more than one day without watching it
   - thinking about reducing the use, and still unsuccessful
   -  giving up social activities

What are the effects?
   - obesity (weight gain)
   - risk for disease (heart attacks, arteriosclerosis)
   - lack of social skills, can not communicate easily with family, friends
   - poor academic results (no time for studying, or just simply reading)\
   - some psychologist believe that too much TV time can have a major effect in the psychology of the
     child
   - lost productivity at the workplace
   - "People no longer know information that's vital to sustain life " (126) (how to...)
   - "because of this "information deficit," we are out of touch with reality and are also standing on a dangerous shelf of oil-dependent, corporate-induced information starvation." (126)

"TV is the most powerfully addictive drug ever developed"(129)

TV is taking one of the most precious things we have: time

things you can do:
- Don't turn on your TV as soon as you get home
- Choose what shows you will watch
- Don't turn on the TV when eating
- Go out
- Find a hobby

There are TV addiction rehab treatments

notes on interview with Naomi Klein

Here are few things I found interesting.
Media should make this information more available and talk about it over and over, so the people would start to think about our earth planet's problems, and not live in their own little world, not knowing what's going on around them.

"we are all metaphorically passengers on that flight"

It’s not that we’re broke. It’s that the money is in the wrong places, and we’re not willing to go get it.

the fossil fuel companies are planning to dig up five times more carbon than that. So they’ve essentially declared war on life on Earth, and they’re also saying, "We don’t believe these politicians are serious when they set that two-degree target." So, that’s where the fossil fuel divestment movement comes in, which is, it’s clear that, left to their own devices, you know, they will bring us towards this catastrophic warming.

it took a while for the world to talk back. And now it’s roaring. And that is climate change.

"solar radiation management." Solar radiation management, managing the sun.
spray sulfur aerosols into the stratosphere, then they would reflect some of the sun’s rays back to space and dim the sun and cool the Earth
the solution to that pollution is pollution in the stratosphere

rather than try to change the laws of nature, try to change what we actually can, which is the laws of economics

What first needs to happen?
need to have bold national policies, like you need to have feed-in tariffs. You need to have clear goals—how much of your grid is going to switch to renewable energy, by what time.
no drilling in the Arctic, no new tar sands, and wind down the tar sands

climate change was playing out in the natural world is also often as a fertility crisis, that we were making the world less fertile, whether we’re making the soil less fertile, whether we’re deliberately making seeds less fertile

HW for Wednesday 9/17. Drig TV/Media Control.

                               Drug TV/Media Control

What do we choose to store in our personal computer - brain, maybe better to say - memory, is up to us. We are living in the 21st century, where everything is electronical. If someone would decide to live without computer equipment, it would be almost impossible (if he/she is living in the city). Almost. There are so many benefits from using computer, cell phone, TV, or radio. There is a world of knowledge at the fingertips. Just Google any question and you will get the answer(it doesn't necessary mean that it's all correct and true information), but still it is a fact that you can find much more stuff then you can imagine.  Even to write this page I used internet to get the knowledge I needed to start with.
Here are some things, for example,  that are proving the point that social media is a good sores of information. 1.Increased criminal prosecution because of social media. Some people are stupid enough to brag about their crimes.  2. Social networking creates new social connections. People get new friends. 3.Social media as a source of employment. (More info in my previous post)
And here are the negative side of social media. 1.Too much misinformation. 2.Pupils spending too much time on social media sites have lower academic grades. 3. Social media sites to blame for lost productivity. 4. It's very addictive
http://www.toptensocialmedia.com/social-media-social-buzz/10-pros-and-cons-of-social-media/
Many people understand that the number one drug in the world is television, it's destroying our society! Since all there is on TV is controlled by 5 or 6 corporations, we will never get the whole truth about our real situation. People are "eating" mostly garbage: shows, gossip about movie stars. And, as Thom Hartmann point out in his book, "Few of us could survive two months if the supermarkets suddenly closed" (127). "People no longer know information that's vital to sustain life..." (126). Men and Women would rather set in the front of the screen and not worry about what is going on around them. It's easier, they don't have to strain their brain, someone else is thinking for them - TV, and entertains them. After a work day, people come home, they want to relax and forget about their problems, they turn on TV, or get on internet, and problem is solved. It's so addictive that if it's taken from them, they could go crazy. I have seen one video on YouTube where one teenager started screaming and banging his head on the bed, going totally crazy, just because his sibling deleted his account on some sort of internet game! He looked like possessed by demons. What I am trying to say is that TV/internet/cell phones are getting into our life not by force , but by our own will. And if we don't control it, it will control us, as we all ready see it all around us.

Now they even have a medical center for internet addiction, where people can get help to get back to the real world from virtual world, they created for themselves.

Drug TV/Media Control

Pros and cons of TV

He feels that the number one drug in the world – television – is destroying our society. Hartmann says watching too much TV arrests one’s mental development and encloses individuals in a ‘me’ mindset, where only the individual is important. This is how society has broken down its ties and the security and support that goes with it. He feels that people fail to mature properly when addicted to TV and lose touch with reality. This is of course true of all addictions.  I wonder what Hartmann would say about all the time youngsters now spend playing on computers?
The alternative is a much healthier  picture – a lot like the one many of us had as children. Family meals around the table, growing your own vegetables, helping your neighbours and being part of a spiritual group which extends to caring for the community as a whole. Hartmann offers solutions that have been there all along, something most of us know deep down is right. We should never take more than we need.

Watching too much TV can lead to weight gain, poor social skills and lower academic resultsUnsupervised children spending too much of their time in front of a TV can have a big impact on their life. Obesity, lack of social skills and poor academic results are just some of the effects TV have on children. Some psychologist believe that too much TV time can have a major effect in the psychology of the child. Children are suppose to interact and play, not sit and watch.

Poor parenting and weight gain
It is also evident that many people spend too much time watching television, so that parents don’t bother to spend any time playing or talking with their children. It is far easier to stick them in front of the television, rather than taking them to the park. It can’t be a coincidence that so many people are now overweight when they spend much more time watching television than they would have done years ago. People used to be a lot more active, but now television is the most convenient way for individuals to keep themselves occupied. Thus, they burn hardly any calories while most probably consuming an excessive amount of calories.
It’s addictive
Even though there are many negative aspects associated with watching television, many people enjoy television far too much to reduce the amount they watch or to avoid watching television altogether. People enjoy not having to think for themselves and to be able to sit down and watch something that helps them to relax, so why would they change?

10 pros and cons of social media
          |

10 pros and cons of social media
Pros and cons of social media

Because of the way the internet has changed the way we communicate and interact with one another on so many levels; it’s become necessary to explore the pros and cons of social media and its effects on our society.

The Pros

1-Increased criminal prosecution because of social media
The NYC police department began using Twitter back in 2011 to track criminals foolish enough to brag about their crimes online. When the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup in 2011, their Vancouver fans took to the streets and rioted, but local authorities used social media to track and tag the people involved, and they caught people who were stealing during the riot.
2-Social networking creates new social connections
Statistics show that 70% of adults have used social media sites to connect with relatives in other states, and 57% of teens have reported making new friendships on social media sites.
3-Students are doing better in school
This is an interesting statistic about the pros and cons of social media and its effect on students doing well in school. Students with internet access at a rate of 50% have reported using social networking sites to discuss school work, and another 59% talk about instructive topics.
4-Better quality of life
If you want to talk about the pros and cons of social media, take a close look at all the support groups on Facebook. Members of these groups discuss their health conditions, share important information, and resources relevant to their conditions while creating strong support networks.
5-Social media as a source of employment
Job sourcing has gone modern thanks to social media. Sites such as LinkedIn are a major resource that 89% of job recruiters take advantage of when looking to hire potential employees.

Now let’s take a look at the Cons of social media.

1-Social media and the news
Much of the news information that people read about comes from social media websites, and that figure estimate is around 27.8 %. This figure ranks just under print newspapers at 28.8%, greater than radio’s figure of 18.8% and far outpaces the figure for other print publications at just 6%.
2-Too much misinformation
With the advent of the web, people started to create their own websites and blogs. While many of those blogs were just basic diaries, a few of them were about topics like health and politics while others were how to blogs.
Many blogs have turned into rumor mills, spreading misinformation that people tend to believe just because it’s on the web.
Rumors about hurricane Sandy and gunfights in other countries like Mexico have been picked up by reliable news services, and this misinformation has been shared without the proper vetting of the sources providing the information.
3-Pupils spending too much time on social media sites have lower academic grades
Here is another argument about the pros and cons of social media as it pertains to students. Statistics show that pupils using social media too often tend to have GPA’s of 3.06 compared to GPA’s of 3.82 for pupils who don’t use social media.
An even scarier fact is that students who use social media tend to score 20 % lower on their test scores then their counterparts.
4-Social media sites to blame for lost productivity
Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are a direct cause for lost productivity at the workplace. In a survey 36 % of people said that social networking was the biggest waste of time in comparison to activities like fantasy football, shopping, and watching television.
5-Social media is the cause for less face to face communication
One last discussion about the pros and cons of social media is a lack of one on one communication. In a 2012 study families who reported spending less time with one another rose from a level of 8% in 2000 to 32% in 2011.
The study also reported that 32 % of the people in the survey either were texting or were on social media sites instead of communicating with each other during family gatherings.

Media censorship/views of past as compared to today
Pop culture references and views of the world (specify) as depicted in television, film, or radio, have varied throughout the decades. What may be deemed mainstays of their time and common in society back then may not necessarily be deemed appropriate in today

Homonyms

Homonyms (also called homophones) are words that sound like one another but have different meanings. Some homonyms are spelled the same, like bark (the sound a dog makes) and bark (the outer layer of a tree trunk). Some homonyms are spelled differently, like one (the number) and won (having been victorious). Note: The Columbia Guide to Standard English defines homophones as words that are pronounced alike and have different spellings (like flower and flour), and defines homonyms as a more general term that includes both homophones and words that are spelled alike and have different meanings (like bank [the edge of a river] and bank [a financial institution]). However, the Random House Unabridged Dictionary (1993 edition) defines the terms homonym and homophone in such a way that each term includes words that are pronounced alike and have different spellings, and also words that are spelled alike and have different meanings.
Some common homonyms include:
